THE NOSHI KNITTING MONOGRAPH SERIES publishes on topics both specific to and tangential to knitting, and occasionally other forms of fiber art. We're interested in the place where theory meets practice; in unusual solutions to technical challenges and in traditional approaches to new problems. We're curious about where knitting came from and where it's going - but spare us your manifestoes unless you've got something on needles that you think changes the conversation. There are how-to magazines with cookie-cutter patterns; there are academic journals where you can theorize about Art and Craft and Culture without ever having made anything yourself; NOSHI is a venue for things that are made with ideas.

Printed on heavy 8.5" X 11" pages, in a folio format, each monograph is a stand-alone piece, binder-ready, and augmented with color photographs, diagrams, or illustrations specific to the written work. Each NOSHI monograph will also be made available, at a discounted price, for sale as a PDF file. Purchasers of monographs in PDF form may then apply the price paid for their PDF towards a hard copy of the monograph if they choose to add it to their collection. The NOSHI Knitting Monograph Series thus provides knitters and other textile artists the ability to create a customized library of exclusive writings on their craft that, in their breadth and depth, would not be available elsewhere.

The NOSHI series does not work on a production schedule, and we make no deadlines, therefore there is never any reason for us to produce, facilitate or publish anything but what we consider to be the best, most inspiring and most thought-provoking work. NOSHI monographs appear when they appear, and using our website's mailing list tool is the best way to stay updated as to when new monographs are ready for purchase.

In Japan, noshi are ornaments created to enhance auspicious gifts. The strands are a collection of diverse materials, with a language of colors and knots which create a code of meaning. The NOSHI Knitting Monograph Series is for knitters who already have the package "all wrapped up" - knitters who are curious, confident, and intrepid -- and are looking for something extra and unique to set that package apart. And, as with the traditional noshi, the NOSHI Knitting Monograph Series is something that, like all thoughtful things, may introduce a few welcome and intriguing "loose ends".
